It is the focus of the Ohio District of Kiwanis Foundation to prevent and treat pediatric trauma. Although we usually think of trauma as being physical in some way, Cheryl Snellgrove has chosen a project that addresses the EMOTIONAL trauma of children who are removed from their homes and placed in foster or relative care.

First Lady's Backpacks
Her plan, which is named "Project Backpack", will involve supplying these children with simple drawstring backpacks and items, such as personal care, stuffed animals, or small blankets, to call their own. These will be given to every child placed into foster or relative care for the next year in the state of Ohio.
The best estimate at the beginning of this year is that between 10,000 and 12,000 kids will need our help. With every Kiwanis club in Ohio on board, we can make this happen.
First Lady Cheryl will be giving more detailed information about the different ways you can support this project during the official visits she makes with Governor Bill during this year. She will also be available to visit your individual clubs to help get you started.
This project is financially manageable for every club and it will benefit 10 - 12,000 kids throughout all 88 counties in Ohio.

A statement from one of the responding County Children Services Departments said, "This project is absolutely something very positive for children experiencing the trauma of relocating away from friends, family, church and school. These backpacks will go a long way in reminding our children that while today may difficult, there are people like those in Kiwanis, providing hope for a better tomorrow."
The Foundation has agreed to split donations of $500 between the Foundation endowment funds and the First Lady's Project and will provide a Past International Presidents Award for a recipient chosen by the donor.
