First Family Project 2010-2011

The First Family Project was started as a challenge. We wanted to make the world a safer place for young children or at least the transport of young children. Little did we know how successful the program would be. A number of Kiwanis Clubs already had projects for CHAD stickers or car seats for young children. Many clubs that did not have a service project in place worked very hard in starting a First Family Project. We estimate that over 35,000 CHAD stickers have been given out in the Ohio District to help identify children in the case of an accident. In the Columbus area there was a request for 60 of the Pedi-Mate units to allow emergency squad personnel to safely transport young children in the back of the medical units. Other clubs reported that they were able to gain new members to their clubs due to the First Family Project.

The response has been beyond our dreams. Please continue to work with the emergency service people in your areas to meet their needs and the needs of the children. Together we have made, and will make a difference, in the lives of children.

Safe Pediatric Transport

Safe pediatric transport projects are possible for clubs of all sizes. CHAD labels and comfort bears are inexpensive items which can have a big impact in your community. Car seat safety checks will protect children while transported in private cars. Pedi boards, Safeguard Child Transport and blow up child car seats are used in emergency squad transport. Working with your local emergency squads, your club can identify items which will help them meet legal requirements for the transport of children after accidents.

Activities Throughout the Ohio District

Clubs throughout the District are meeting with their emergency squads to determine the equipment that they need. Safety Day events are an excellent way to educate the public about safe transport of children. Thousands of CHAD Stickers have been given out. Many clubs have expanded their annual events to include this education. Grants from the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation have matched what some clubs are able to provide from their local fundraising activities.
